Songstresses has always been an integral part of the cultural history of Kolkata. And those history dates back at least a century back. The area between Hatibagan and Beedon Street is what was dominated by the sound of anklets and melodies by songstresses. The corinthian pillars of the theatres resounded the sound of claps of the intoxicated audience. The songstresses came from remote villages or from the outskirts of the city to earn a fortune by spreading their youthful radiance in the theatre world of the city. The radiance attracted audience right from the first half of the nineteenth century.
The indigenous theatres or Jatra also had their all women's group in the city.
